Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain-interface company, has set ambitious goals for 2025. The company aims to scale up access to its brain implant, allowing users to control external devices such as computer cursors and robotic arms using neural activity. While Neuralink remains in its experimental phase, the technology has already demonstrated significant promise, particularly for individuals with paralysis.

In November 2024, Noland Arbaugh, one of the first patients to receive the Neuralink implant, showcased its capabilities by live-streaming his daily activities. Despite his paralysis, Arbaugh navigated a computer screen, played video games, and even interacted online using only his thoughts. This revolutionary technology, known as the N1 implant, was surgically placed by a team working with Neuralink.


Expanding Clinical Trials

Elon Musk envisions a future where millions of people benefit from Neuralink’s devices. On X (formerly Twitter), he speculated that within a few years, Neuralink implants could be in the hands of tens of thousands of users, and within a decade, millions. However, progress has been slower than Musk anticipated. By early 2025, only three individuals had received the implant. Musk shared in January that Neuralink is planning to treat 20 to 30 patients this year, provided there are no major setbacks.

Neuralink has also updated its clinical trials to accommodate more participants. In the U.S., the study now includes five volunteers (up from three), while a separate study in Canada is recruiting six participants. These expansions aim to accelerate the pace of trials, with additional international studies potentially increasing the number of patients treated by year-end.


Improvements to the Implant

Neuralink continues to refine the functionality of its brain implant. For instance, Arbaugh reported during his livestream that his mouse control was hindered by outdated calibration models. To address this, Neuralink is focused on optimizing the software that interprets neural signals and converts them into device commands. The company’s goal is to drastically reduce recalibration times, enabling a smoother and more intuitive user experience.

Neuralink also plans to enhance its hardware. Musk recently announced that upcoming tests will feature an improved version of the Neuralink device, which may include increased electrode density and extended battery life. Additionally, Neuralink is developing its R1 surgical robot, which automates the delicate process of implanting neural electrodes. The company’s long-term vision includes scaling the process to accommodate millions of patients, a feat that would require full automation due to the limited number of neurosurgeons available.


Integrating External Devices

Neuralink is testing the integration of its implant with external devices, such as a robotic assistance arm. This device could allow users with mobility impairments to perform everyday tasks like brushing their hair or adjusting clothing. While the robotic arm remains in the experimental phase, its potential for enhancing independence is significant.


Vision Restoration

In addition to aiding motor function, Neuralink is exploring applications for vision restoration. The company has received FDA approval for a “breakthrough device” designation for its Blindsight system, which aims to restore limited vision for the blind. The implant works by sending electrical signals to the brain’s visual cortex, generating light points (phosphenes) that could form a pixelated image. However, clinical trials for this feature have yet to begin.


Challenges and Scrutiny

Neuralink has faced criticism over its treatment of test animals and the safety of its human trials. Regulators and animal rights groups have closely monitored the company’s practices, raising concerns about the speed at which Neuralink is pushing its technology to market. Musk’s influence in regulatory circles, combined with his advocacy for deregulation, could play a role in overcoming these hurdles.

Despite these challenges, Neuralink raised $325 million in funding in 2023, valuing the company at over $3 billion. Industry experts expect further investments this year as Neuralink continues to innovate and expand.


Competitive Landscape

Neuralink is not alone in the race to develop brain-computer interfaces. Competitors like Synchron, Paradromics, and BlackRock Neurotech are also advancing their technologies, offering unique solutions for neural control and data interpretation.
